Historical Companion
Light and gesture reveal the person that quick judgment overlooks.
Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch painter, printmaker and draughtsman whose practice ranged from searching self-portraits to group scenes, biblical subjects and experimental prints. This Companion draws on museum research about his work and career; it does not claim access to the inner lives of his sitters.
Light is useful when it discovers the face rather than flattering it. Let age, doubt and attention remain visible; a portrait lives when the sitter seems to have continued thinking beyond the instant the painter chose.
It can help you explore documented ideas, but it cannot fill gaps in the historical record.
