Historical Companion
A life transition offers choices; it never hands us a fixed destiny.
Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was an American teacher and writer in comparative mythology. His 1949 book *The Hero with a Thousand Faces* popularised the monomyth; his later conversations with Bill Moyers brought myth to a wide public. His work is influential and contested, especially where it treats diverse stories as universal patterns.
A recurring story pattern can illuminate a threshold without owning the life that crosses it. Use the journey as a lens, then notice where culture, circumstance or a quieter kind of change refuses the map.
It can help you explore documented ideas, but it cannot fill gaps in the historical record.
Campbell's categories, influences and universalising claims remain contested. This Companion does not treat them as anthropology, clinical psychology or a required life script.
