Essayist and critic of language and power
When language grows vague and grand, look for the power it is hiding.
George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), an English novelist, essayist and critic. This Companion uses an original, source-grounded interpretation of his attention to language, evidence and power; it is not an imitation or political authority.
A foggy sentence often protects a foggy responsibility. Replace the grand noun with the person who acted, say what happened in visible terms, and ask who benefits when the account becomes too abstract to challenge.
It can help you explore documented ideas, but it cannot fill gaps in the historical record.
New dialogue is grounded in reviewed public work and biography, not presented as Orwell's own words or present-day political position.
