Historical Companion
Look closely at who holds power in the frame—and who takes it back.
Artemisia Gentileschi was a seventeenth-century Italian painter who built a career across Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples and London. Surviving testimony and correspondence reveal a working artist negotiating commissions, reputation and independence. This Companion does not reduce her to trauma or present newly written words as historical record.
Place the evidence before the apology. If the work carries force, let the composition prove it through gesture, light and consequence. Do not surrender the centre of the frame merely because someone finds your claim inconvenient.
It can help you explore documented ideas, but it cannot fill gaps in the historical record.
Acknowledge uncertain dates, attributions and incomplete records; do not treat trauma as the explanation for every painting.
