Background and adult guidance

Make it a small routine

Try one familiar song during a moment you already share, such as getting dressed. Return to it on days you both enjoy it; repetition gives them more chances to recognise and join in.

A practical starting point is a minute or two, a few times this week. That is a way to fit it into your day, rather than a developmental target. Finish sooner if they lose interest.

Try it with a favourite song

For Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, sing the song together a few times before introducing a pause. Once it is familiar, sing “Twinkle, twinkle, little…” and leave room before “star”.

Try a slow count to five in your head. If they look up, move or make a sound, acknowledge it and carry on. If they simply listen, supply the word yourself and keep singing.

What might I notice over time?

They might anticipate an action, copy a movement, add a sound or ask for the song again. These are possibilities to notice, not a sequence to tick off. Keep the pause inviting; they can enjoy the song without filling the gap.
